And if they hadn’t invited us there to see it for ourselves, we would have never guessed that Margaritaville was Cancun’s best-kept secret to an attractive (and SUPER affordable) destination wedding! Here’s everything you need to know about getting married at Margaritaville Island Reserve® Riviera Maya, as well as behind-the-scenes pics from our stay there.

Now, before you run to the comments, we know what you’re thinking. Margaritaville–for a wedding? We thought the same thing! But the truth is, the only Margaritaville that we had been to before was the restaurant spin-off and what we saw at Margaritaville Island Reserve® Riviera Maya blew our expectations right out of the water.

the rooms

With 355 guest rooms and suites, Margaritaville Island Reserve® Riviera Maya is likely big enough to host all of your wedding guests who would want to stay on-site for the big day. But, it’s also intimate enough that you don’t feel like you’re walking miles just to get from one end to the other. Whether it was the all-inclusive idea or the super walkable layout, staying at the resort reminded us of being on a cruise–everything right at your fingertips and some seriously epic views.

We stayed in one of their Oceanfront Infinity Pool Suites and we were WOWed by the views, to say the least. From our terrace, we could take a dip in the infinity pool (just outside our window) while we took in the incredible oceanfront views.

The decor was contemporary and island-themed without being too on the nose. And the bathroom…You know we love a bath moment so when we saw that lovely soaking tub and rain shower, we were all 😍.

Cancun has a rep as a party-spot and while there was plenty of fun to be had, the vibe at the resort was pretty chill overall. And clean! The pools were spotless and had more than enough lounge chairs and areas for everyone to relax and take in the sun and the ocean breeze.

You know we had to check out the St. Somewhere Spa! They had an extensive menu of services with names inspired by local flavors and tropical drinks, but the experience was what you would expect from any upscale spa. We decided on the “Mezcalito mi Amor Massage” which was a combo of Lomi Lomi, Swedish, and firm techniques using agave body oil designed to revitalize the skin and soothe muscles. Yep…it worked! But, before we unwound with the massage, we were treated to the spa’s “Water Journey Ritual”. It was a 50-minute hydrotherapy session that had us alternating between hot and cold and various pools, and saunas, culminating in a sound bath that was unexpected and completely relaxing. Imagine getting out all of those pre-wedding nerves by working them out together in a hydrotherapy sesh before a couple’s massage. PERFECTION!

Plus, the spa even has a special wedding suite that couples can use to get ready. Not only does it have a vanity where you can get your glam on, but there is a private massage table in the room too, and a shower! They even have a dress form where you can display your dress for photo ops and keep it wrinkle-free as you prep for the day ahead. The spa also offers beauty services like hair, makeup, nails, etc. So no need to run around to a million places the day before, this place is a one-stop-shop. Plus they’ll give all of your guests 15% off of their spa services!

the food & drinks

The best part about being at an all-inclusive resort is that everything is right there. Seriously, once we got to the resort, we didn’t leave until we were on our way back to the airport! You can literally walk from your wedding rehearsal to your rehearsal dinner and not even have to switch out of your heels. As far as the selections go, there are two fine-dining restaurants and either would be an awesome experience for you and your guests. We checked out “JWB Steakhouse” and were treated to a little surprise before we sat down to eat. The restaurant’s Meat Sommelier came out to meet us and invited us back into the glass cooler where he explained the different cuts. After we made our selections we sat down for a beautiful meal in the warmly lit brick dining area.

For breakfast and lunch, you and your guests can grab lunch whenever works best with the schedule, at any of the casual dining options, or you can do what we did and order FREE ROOM SERVICE! There’s seriously nothing like sipping a latte in a plush robe while you look out at the ocean.

You can host your wedding dinner at the restaurants on-site or if you want a more private celebration, they have beautiful ballroom spaces and a sky terrace. All of their packages include a custom-printed menu, and if you do opt for one of the private spaces, their chefs will work with you to craft a custom menu just for the occasion. They can even make your wedding cake!

Whether you’re eloping or want a big ballroom wedding, Margaritaville Island Reserve® Riviera Maya can accommodate events with up to 200 guests. And their packages start at just $990! “Courtney and Sykes both attended Texas A&M and, for months, had mutual friends who were trying to set them up. Finally, after some foiled attempts, Courtney was introduced to Sykes at a college football game. For their proposal, Sykes planned a day at the Houston Club, as well as a dinner afterward with their closest family and friends.”

After spending a whole day trying on multiple dresses at other boutiques nothing felt quite right until I went to my last appointment that day at the Miami flagship store. Not only did everything feel so perfect from the moment I stepped foot in the store, but I also happened to be there during a trunk show and had the privilege of meeting Galia’s very own head designer, Sharon Sever. He was such a gem, and together with my amazing bridal assistant, Nicole Abecia, I tried on the Anna gown. We all immediately knew she was the one. “My beautiful gown’s journey didn’t end there though. As we got closer to the date, I started to feel like the dress was missing something. Since I was getting married in Tulum and was not originally thinking of having a second dress, the fitted silhouette of the original Anna gown was perfect. However, my vision for my Tulum wedding was far from the traditional laid back boho weddings that are the norm there. I was envisioning a grand, elegant, and enchanting wedding in the jungle, calling my vision “Tuscany in Tulum”. With that in mind, I knew my Anna gown needed more. That’s when I went back into the Miami studio and together with my GL fairy godmother, Nicole, and the fantastic, Carol, the store seamstress, we designed the most perfect overskirt to compliment the gown. Of course, we sent Sharon pictures along the way. The day of my final fitting was a dream come true. Once everything was perfectly tailored and the overskirt put on, it was truly a vision. Not only was it timeless and elegant, but it now had that added drama that just took the gown to the next level. I ended up not wearing the gloves for the ceremony, but instead saved them to be used as part of my second look.” – Bride, Steph

“Our story started around 30 years ago, when both of our fathers met and eventually became best friends as two United airline pilots. Our families have always been close friends, but life took both Michael and I in different directions throughout the years so beyond staying up-to-date on each other’s lives through our parents, we were never really in touch in our earlier years. Although, a funny story is that I always had a crush on him since I was little and I would jokingly tell my mom that he was my husband whenever I would see pictures from afar—talk about manifesting haha.”

“Fast forward to September 2017, Hurricane Irma was approaching South Florida while I was attending medical school in Miami, and Mike was working in Fort Lauderdale after having just recently moved back from NYC. The weather forecast called for Irma to become a category 5 hurricane and my mom was concerned that staying in my Miami high-rise apartment wouldn’t be safe. My family lives in Virginia, so as a concerned mom, she called a friend in south Florida to find me a safer place to stay. That friend was Isabelle Romero, Mike’s mom. It was at this time that Mike and I were reintroduced after 15 years of not seeing each other, and our connection was instant.”

“As anticipated, Hurricane Irma caused a lot of damage and we were left without electricity for 2 weeks. Those two weeks away from the outside world allowed Mike and I to really get to know each other. We stayed up late, night after night, talking about music, life, and future goals. After we were able to get back to our normal everyday lives we continued to see each other. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and the next thing we knew we were in a serious relationship. Mike’s dad had passed away from lung cancer shortly before Hurricane Irma, so months later the news our relationship brought a lot of happiness to both of our families who had recently suffered a loss. This was something everyone could celebrate! Fast forward another 5 years, and Mike and I were engaged. I immediately went full steam ahead into wedding planning mode and began looking for my dream dress [at Galia Lahav].”

“Everything was just pure magic, I think I have to let the pictures do most of the talking. It was also amazing that the weather was absolutely perfect and we had a full moon. The date itself, 2/24/24 was perfect too. Danilo & Sharon, our photographers, are the absolute best. I cannot rave about them enough! We also made the best decision in hiring a content creator, Ashley of Amore Films, to capture all the behind the scenes moments. Can’t recommend her enough! Additionally, we had videographers, Tan Weddings. Cannot wait to see our wedding weekend through their lens!”

“A few years ago we took a trip to Sicily (which is where Nico’s family is from and where we got engaged!) and I was overcome by how lush and overgrown the landscape was – I’m a bit of a plant fanatic. We would have loved to have our wedding in Sicily but we thought the trip would be too much of an expense for some of our friends/family so we decided Mexico – with the wild nature of the jungle, would be the perfect backdrop and a more accessible destination. We did some research and fell in love with some of the other weddings we had seen in Tulum and decided to take a trip out there to see what it was all about. We stayed at the Alaya Hotel (where we ended up having our wedding ceremony!) which we immediately fell in love with. We fell in love with the powder-white sand beaches, turquoise waters of the Caribbean, all cast against the lush foliage of the jungle. Tulum captures all the things we love, with its laid back vibe, the incredible food and craft cocktails, and the ambient house beats playing at all hours day and night. An elemental, pre-Hispanic wedding ceremony

Beata and Nico’s oceanfront wedding ceremony was culturally unique, as they celebrated in several pre-Hispanic era rituals honoring the elements. It was a stunningly colorful ceremony, surrounded in boho blooms by Grisel Serrano Florals.

“Our ceremony was really special. It was a pre-Hispanic ceremony – a spiritual union, with nature as our witness. A ritual filled with symbolism, in balance with the 4 basic elements (earth, water, fire, & air), to bless us with joy, abundance, & understanding. It was amazing and really different than anything our guests have ever seen – feathered pre Hispanic musicians, a sahamudora cleansing us with copal, and an altar of symbolic elements to bless our union.” – Bride, Beata

“During the ceremony we added a little element – in addition to exchanging our rings we also exchanged tokens – a floral crown for me and a floral necklace for Nico. I had read that the crown would protect the woman’s mind and the necklace symbolized protecting the man’s heart. This particularly spoke to me because I feel like I can have a frantic mind sometimes and Nico can balance me and put me at ease.” – Bride, Beata

Advice from the couple:

“Absolutely hire a wedding planner and don’t settle for anyone but the best. I researched a number of planners that worked in the riviera maya and was instantly impressed with Diana’s work. She is an amazing designer and was so easy to work with – super organized and made the stress of wedding planning especially nonexistent. She also has the intel for the best vendors that can make your vision come to life.

Absolutely have a small/intimate destination wedding! Keeping it small allowed us to have only the most important people in our lives there and obviously kept down the costs – not saying it was cheap…but for 50 people you can have the best of everything. Most of our guests stayed at the same boutique hotel that we did (Alaya) and it was blast waking up every morning and having breakfast with all our friends and family, laying out on the beach with endless margaritas, and then walking off the buzz exploring the streets of Tulum.

Suck it up and pay for – a little extra money is better than regret. I didn’t even consider having a videographer tbh but Diana suggested we absolutely need to have one and omg our videographer (About Time) blew us away – they even had a drone that flew over the ceremony and captured a bird eye view of the ocean/beach/jungle. I also didn’t think about lighting – but Diana was right, it was incredibly important – it set the mood and turned it into an event.”

Dark & moody reception with a tarot touch

The lush colors of the Tulum jungle were accented by gorgeous floral design by Grisel Serrano Florals that gave off a dark and moody boho flair. The centerpieces completely tied together the wedding’s “Til Death Do Us Part” theme that was brought to life through bold rentals from Archive and lighting by La Productora.

“Our florist (Grisel) was absolutely incredible. Our wedding planner recommended a number of florists and when I saw her work I knew she was the one. She didn’t make arrangements, she made art and her style was free, organic, and almost undone if that makes sense. A perfect level of disorder that made it look wild- though it had just happened like that in nature. I wanted a mix of fresh and preserved botanicals – sort of a play on life and death and I wanted tones of red with neutrals that ranged from bone and beige to almost black.”

“I think the tarot theme was unique – we wanted to bring a little mystical dark touch but we didn’t want it to be cheesy – we still wanted it to be chic. Our tables were marked with different tarot cards (our table was “The Lovers” card of course) and then for the seating cards everyone had a mini tarot card to direct them to their table. To play up the theme we also had a tarot reader for our guests to visit during the reception. And our welcome bags were printed with the lovers tarot card and filled with Mexican treats like jalapeño lime tortilla chips and Mexican spiced dark chocolate.” – Bride, Beata

A special performance from the couple’s son

A special highlight of the reception was when the couple’s 6 year old son, Kai, joined the live guitar player, picked up a microphone, and tried to sing along! His adorable performance was shortly followed up by him again grabbing the microphone after the bridal party speeches to give his own speech (“Daddy loves me so much…and mommy loves me way more than daddy.”) and cracking up the whole reception.

To end the night, the couple (and Kai) spent the evening dancing away to the tunes of DJ Alessio. Isn’t the jungle the coolest dance club venue?!

When Sarah and Harout were planning their destination wedding in Cabo, they had a list of must-haves: ocean views, florals, chandeliers, and fireworks! These spectacular elements came together to create their dream fairytale wedding that every guest would remember – from a gorgeous Armenian ceremony to their lavish white rose reception.

The bride’s dream Galia Lahav dress

Sarah had dreamed for years about wearing her favorite designer, Galia Lahav, before finding her perfect match in the “Gia” gown. Her floral detailed, corseted dress was perfect for Cabo with sheer tulle and champagne color. Paired with gorgeous glam from Angelica Global Beauty, she was the vision of a timeless bride!

Armenian wedding traditions start before the ceremony

In Armenian weddings, the groom’s family gifts the bride with her accessories (shoes, veil, perfume, bag) brought to the bridal room with music and dancing. Harout’s entire family walked through the hotel with these gift baskets singing and dancing to the Sarah’s room.

When bride’s family receives these gifts as the two families become one in celebration. The veil is then placed on the bride by the maid of honor to symbolize love, patience, joy, happiness, and health. We love Sarah’s floral lace embroidered veil with a blusher!

As the groom takes his bride, a boy from the bride’s side (Sarah’s brother for this instance) stops them with a knife in the door. It is the best man’s duty to pay the brother and let the couple go. We’re so glad the best man paid up, so we could see these sweethearts walk down the aisle!

Desert rose Azazie bridesmaids fashion

For her gorgeous bridesmaids dresses, the bride selected the color “desert rose” from Azazie – while letting her girls pick each of their unique styles. We love mixing dress styles all in the same dreamy color!

Oceanside rose Armenian ceremony

As a true romantic, bride Sarah has always loved roses and knew she envisioned a sea of white roses to create a fairytale effect for her ceremony and reception! Native Floral Studio brought her vision to life during her Armenian ceremony. She chose the running centerpieces down the aisle to be low so as not to block the beautiful ocean views of Garza Blanca Los Cabos – an especially gorgeous touch!

The lavish florals were reminiscent of Harout’s proposal to Sarah! He proposed to her at her favorite sushi restaurant, as the couple are huge sushi fanatics. When they arrived for dinner, Sarah was led to a private room full of flowers and candles where she was stunned by Harout beaming a smile on one knee. Their whole family joined them for a night of decadent sushi and admiring her new ring!

The couple’s Armenian wedding was officiated by the bride’s close uncle, creating a personal and intimate ceremony.

A prominent Armenian tradition that the bride and groom included in their ceremony was being crowned while a cross is held over their heads in prayer. This tradition symbolizes that the couple is now the “king and queen” of their own family.

Timeless white and gold accented reception

The one word that was most important to the bride and groom wedding aesthetic: timeless. Every part of their design by The Cabo Wedding Co radiated their classically elegant style, with an all-white color palette with subtle gold accents. The couple brought their love of chandeliers into the reception space!

We love the elegant curved menus and modern table numbers from Minted. The guests enjoyed a delicious three course meal, paired with a signature black mojito and passionfruit margarita cocktails.

Pyrotechnics for a dazzling first dance & finale

We are obsessed with the trend of fireworks for a wedding finale! Sarah and Harout included two types of pyrotechnics with a cold sparkler first dance followed by colorful epic fireworks by Cabo Fireworks Company over the ocean. The fireworks were definitely the most magical moment for the couple!

We love how this reflective dance floor created an endless starlight effect – incredibly romantic for the first dance to music by DJAY Co. As the grand fireworks finale went off, the saxophone played a heartwarming rendition of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”.

The bride knew she would marry her groom after just 3 days together, and this wedding radiates their love. Bespoke Bride & Groom Fashion

One of the most unique parts of Mikala and Andrew’s wedding style was their custom attire! The bride spent 6 months designing her custom wedding dress with LUXTAILOR to create a stunning vintage inspired gown. While “everyone said she was crazy” to design her own dress, Mikala gives all the credit to the custom designer who brought her vision to life.

Inspired by Old Hollywood icons such as Vivienne Westwood & Marilyn Monroe, Mikala was a vision in vintage. She accessorized with Christopher Kane feathered veil and Manolo Blahnik emerald heels. Her bedazzled makeup look was created by David Friedmann.

Andrew wore an INDOCHINO suit with several phrases embroidered. A blending of the couple’s last names “Goldchevski”, “Go Birds” (in support of the Philadelphia Eagles), and “Meet me in Tulum” added to his custom groom style.

While they knew they wanted to return to Tulum for their nuptials, the bride knew she hated the sand and felt there was too much left up to chance for a beach wedding. When she found Kima Tulum in a magazine she fell in love with venue, in the heart of the jungle. This backdrop was a Jumanji-esque slice of tropical paradise!
